This twentieth-century rendering captures the tensions and terror that pervaded the Salem Village Meetinghouse during the witchcraft trials of 1692. A minimum of 234 people were accused of being witches in seventeenth-century New England. Of these, authorities executed 36. Salem Village, with its 19 executions, thus accounted for over half of all New England's executions, obviously a horrendous outbreak of fear and death for so small a place.

Dozens of them stood trial for the crime of witchcraft, and of these a full score or more went to their deaths on the sinister gallows atop Witch's Hill. Only the belated intervention of the colony's most powerful ministers and officeholders finally brought the killing to a halt late in 1692. The ghastly business had begun when a group of adolescent girls started telling fortunes with a West Indian slave, then went into bizzare hysterical seizures, and finally turned to accusations of witchcraft to relieve their torment.
