Native Americans now faced cruelty, exploitation, and oppression that extended through the rest of the nineteenth century and beyond 1900. In the face of these relentless pressures from white society, Indians struggled just to survive. WOMEN IN THE 1870S White women during this time did not have anything that approached social or political equality with men. Amid the male-dominated public life, women struggled for some political rights, a foothold in the new industrial economy, and a way to make their voices heard about social issues.

Many urban women also took in boarders. As a result, their intensified routine equaled that of operating a small hotel. In the daily rhythms of American society in this period, as in earlier times, the often unpaid and unrecognized labor of women was indispensable to the nation’s advancement. Middle-class women with domestic servants had some assistance, but they still did a daunting amount of work. Preparing food, washing laundry by hand, keeping the house warm before electricity, and disposing of waste all demanded hard labor.

The Democrats had reached a Grant and the 1872 Election low point behind Greeley. Worn out by the rigors of the campaign, he died in late November. The triumph was a mixed one for Grant: he remained in the White House, but scandals would soon plague his second term.
