Data bases operated by the Library of Congress or regularly accessed by it are probably the most extensive offered by any institution in the world offering The Americas 57 services to the public. The data bases can, perhaps, best be grouped as: bibliographical data bases; the data bases of other Federal agencies; data bases provided on-line by the Lockheed Corporation's DIALOG service; data bases provided on-line through the System Development Corporation's ORBIT service; other data bases such as that of the New York Times; and the confidential SCORPIO data bases which the Library of Congress provides for Congress.
Any funds which might be raised to meet operational objectives of national libraries were to be made available to the national library which was to carry major operational responsibility for the particular international project concerned. This proved to be difficult for a number of national libraries. Nevertheless, substantial sums were raised for projects which could be seen to be a measure of economy in the long run and which it was beyond the resources of IFLA to fund. run, face up to the necessity of living within its own resources.
